Reed Drilling

Bootman's Reed Drilling Process
Improves the response of your favorite reeds!

I’ve been drilling my reeds for several years now since I found Bootman’s web pages. I’m often asked, “Why is there a hole in your reed?” Well, let me tell you. It improves the response of a reed. I don’t pretend to know how it works, but it does work. The hole does not go all the way through the reed. Here, take a look at Bootman’s Pictures and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

By the way, I don’t use exactly the same setup as Bootman. I use a Dremel drill press with a Dremel router bit in it, and I just hold the reed with my hand. After I drill the hole in the same size and place as Bootman, I balance the reed and adjust it for strength. I can usually use most of the reeds in a box.

Try it. What have you got to loose except for a reed or two? But I think you’ll be surprised.
